Strasburg History

A party of Pennsylvania Germans came to Franklin Twp. in 1810 and settled about a mile from Strasburg's present site on Broad Run. Strasburg is located in the east and central part of Franklin Twp., the last township to be formed in the county. It was originally included within the boundaries of Lawrence Township, then Wayne Township. It was in the latter part of 1827 that Strasburg was formally surveyed and laid out by John Folck. Originally, the Strasburg town site embracing 47 lots, ranged on both sides of what today is Wooster Avenue, the north and south highway from Canton to New Philadelphia, Dover and points south.

In 1872 the Cleveland, Lorain and Wheeling Railroad, now a part of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was built. In the Late 1930's the Baltimore and Ohio had a passenger train from Wheeling to Cleveland and it stopped at the Strasburg Station for Passengers. Farming and lumbering kept men busy. In the early 1890's Grant Ganagy influenced a Cleveland Company to make fire brick here. The first Corn Festival was held in July, 1982 and has become an annual event.

Today, Strasburg is a prosperous village located at the junction of Route 250 and I-77. An estimated 13,000 vehicles pass through the village each day. Strasburg now has about 2,000 residents and over 100 business. Strasburg has made progress since those days of 1828 and is still going forward with new businesses and new homes.
