A Date With History

The featured Speaker at Fort Laurens this month is Professor of History, Kevin Kerns from the University of Akron. He specializes in Ohio History and will present his lecture entitled “Ohio Must Lead!” which will focus on Ohio’s contribution to the America Military from the American Revolution to the American Civil War.

Professor Kerns will speak at the museum on Saturday September 12 at 7 PM. There is a $5.00 charge for this event which will include refreshments and a tour of Fort Laurens.

Professor Kerns said that “One of the most popular misconceptions about history as a field of study is that it is simply a description of what has happened in the past. To be sure, facts and events are important raw materials for the historian, but they are important mostly as means toward the ultimate end of achieving a sense of understanding and significance.”

Kerns is working on a book about Ohio history which is yet to be published.

Fort Laurens State Memorial is located at 11067 Fort Laurens Road NE in Bolivar, Ohio, and is the site of the only Revolutionary War Fort in what is now Ohio. Operated by the Tuscarawas County Convention and Visitors Bureau, the museum and grounds are open Wednesday through Sundays, May 1 to October 31.

Please call (330) 874-2059 to RSVP for this event as seating is limited. All military and students (with ID) may register for free.
