The Dover Historical Society and the Friends of the Dover Public Library will be co-sponsoring a program about John Steinbeck’s classic novel, The Grapes of Wrath, on Saturday, September 11th at 1:00 PM in the Carriage House of the Reeves Home and Museum. Steinbeck scholar Robert DeMott will examine the historical, literary, and personal background and sources for this powerful novel, as well as discussing Steinbeck’s motivations. Most critics consider The Grapes of Wrath to be Steinbeck’s masterpiece, ranking among the premier American literary achievements in the 20th century.

“We are excited about this unique opportunity to partner with the Dover Historical Society on this project,” says Jim Gill, Director of the Dover Public Library. “I can think of no other piece of literature that captures so perfectly what it means to be an American. The Grapes of Wrath is a novel that has stood the test of time.”

“Working with the Dover Public Library on a project has long been a goal of ours at the Dover Historical Society,” says Historical Society Director Matt Lautzenheiser, “and this project is such a great fit. It really ties together the best of American literature and a watershed moment in U.S. History.”

Robert DeMott is Distinguished Professor of English at Ohio University where he teaches literature and writing. He has won numerous awards for teaching excellence and published many articles and books on the life and writings of John Steinbeck. Following his program DeMott will be available to sign copies of his annotated edition of The Grapes of Wrath and his edited edition of Steinbeck’s journals titled, Working Days: The Journals of the Grapes of Wrath. Copies of both books will be available for sale the day of the event. Admission to the program is free and all are welcome. This program is part of the Ohio Humanities Council speaker’s series in commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the New Deal legislation. For more information, please call the Dover Historical Society at 330-343-7040 or the Dover Public Library at 330-343-6123.

June is just around the corner and with the change in months comes one of the busiest times of the year for weddings. For those invited to weddings and bridal showers, finding a unique gift for the couple is often hard to find among the big box superstores where many couples register. The answer for a unique, long lasting gift? The Warther Carvings Gift Shop in Dover, Ohio.

When you mention Warther’s to most people, the first thought is of “Mooney” Warther’s famous train carvings, which are a spectacular sight, but another gem of the Warther family is the handcrafted kitchen cutlery made on site.

In 1902, Mooney created his first kitchen knife for his mother and soon after she showed the knife to friends and neighbors, the entire town was ordering knives and the Warther family knife business was born. Today, the third and fourth generations of the Warther family are still making knives using American made materials, such as rust-resistant high carbon tool steel and Vermont birch wood. Also unique to the Warther knives is the “spotting” or engine turning of the blade. This fine swirl design on the blade helps the blade to look newer longer.

Warther kitchen cutlery comes in many styles, from traditional chef knives such as paring or boning, to those with serrated blades or steak knives. Individual knives can be purchased, but the most popular gifts for weddings are Warther knife sets in a wall or counter block holder. To make the gift even more special, consider having the couple’s names and wedding date engraved on the holder. An exotic wood cutting board would also make a great addition.

To you know of a couple currently planning a wedding? Warther’s also recently introduced a new wedding cake knife with a 9″ blade and white pearlized engraved handle, which would be a beautiful wedding keepsake.

Warther knives are sure to be a cherished gift by the couple and will last for many generations. And as included with all Warther knives, free sharpening is included for life of the knives.

Warther Carvings & Gift Shop is located just off Interstate 77, exit 83 in Dover, Ohio. For more information and hours, call 330-343-7513, or visit www.warthers.com.

The year is 1904 and the residents and staff of the Reeves Home are preparing for a formal dinner and dance at the home. As activity abounds, visitors will meet a cast of characters including the housekeeper, personal servant, day help, a young suitor, and even Miss Lillian Reeves in what is sure to be an unforgettable evening.

After a two year hiatus, Mrs. Evans is returning to the J.E. Reeves Home and she’s bringing a whole cast of new characters. In April the Dover Historical Society will once again host a living history program in the J.E. Reeves Home. This year’s program will be greatly expanded and will feature eight characters in costume in the J.E. Reeves Home.

In 2009 the Dover Historical Society received a grant from the Dewey H. and Irene Moomaw Foundation Trust to partner with Dover City Schools and expand the current living history program. This spring the Dover Historical Society is working with Dover High School drama teacher, Tom Morris, and several of his talented students to produce an exciting all new living history program.

The program will be held on Friday and Saturday April 16th, 17th, 23rd, and 24th with a Sunday afternoon show available on April 25th. Show times are 6:30pm and 7:00pm on Friday and Saturday and 3:00pm on Sunday. Cost for the program is $12.00 for members of the Dover Historical Society and $15.00 for non-members. To make reservations, please contact Matt Lautzenheiser at the Dover Historical Society (330)343-7040.

In addition to the Living History Program, for one day only you can bring home a piece of the Reeves Museum’s stunning gardens. Just in time for spring, the J.E. Reeves Home will host a seed sale in the Carriage House of the Reeves Museum on Saturday April 17, 2010.

Between the hours of 10am and 3pm, Reeves Home Gardener Renee Leetch will be on hand to sell seeds she gathered during the summer and fall of 2009. All of the seeds are neatly packaged with growing directions and a photo of what the mature plant will look like. Renee will also be happy to answer gardening questions and sign up volunteers for the 2010 season.

There is no admission charge to come out and browse the seeds and all the proceeds for the event will benefit the gardens. Please make plans to come out and join us, pick up something for your garden and help us to support ours.

Dover OH – For the fifth consecutive year, Toland-Herzig’s Famous Endings Museum, located within the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory at 803 N. Wooster Ave., Dover is celebrating Black History Month with a spectacular 150-artifact display.

“Black history is more than just Black history – it is World history,” noted Toland-Herzig president and Famous Endings curator, John Herzig. “My interest in having a collection like this is driven by my personal interest in history and historical figures. In honor of Black History Month, the display will be highlighting a variety of influential black leaders from politics, entertainment, sports and more.”

Notable in the collection are the funeral memorial folders for figures such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, Arthur Ashe, Mahalia Jackson, Jackie Robinson and Jesse Owens. Other more contemporary celebrities would include: Michael Jackson, Bernie Mac, Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles, Johnny Cochran, Steve McNair, Ed Bradley, and many, many more. This year will also feature newer pieces acquired since the last display, including funeral stationery and memorabilia from the services of: James Brown, Gerald Levert, June Pointer, Freddie Gorman, Ennis Cosby (Bill Cosby’s son), Elston Howard, professional fighter, Big John Tate, Master Chief – who was the Navy’s first African American diver and was depicted by Cuba Gooding, Jr. in the motion picture Men of Honor, Carl Bashear, Billy Preston, Bo Diddley, Sammy Davis, Jr., Isaac Hayes, Wayman Tisdale, Mary Wells, George Washington Carver, and Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones.

The display will be highlighted throughout the month of February and, as always, there is no charge to view the collection.

On Saturday October 3, 2009 from 5pm-8pm, the Dover Historical Society will host an Oktoberfest Beer Tasting in the Carriage House of the J.E. Reeves Home. This fundraiser features the signature beers of the Great Lakes Brewing Company along with food and entertainment. A representative from the Great Lakes Brewing Company will share information about how their beers are brewed, special ingredients, and other additional information about Ohio’s most award winning brewery. Food for the event will be prepared by the Dover St. Johns Men’s Fellowship. The menu includes favorites such as Bratwurst, Sauerkraut and German potato salad.

In addition to the beer tasting and food, the event will also feature Oktoberfest music by strolling accordionist, Matt Schafer. Schafer is the host of the Saturday Morning Polka Show on WZIP in Akron, he has also performed with Polka legend Frankie Yankovic. Tickets for the event will be $20.00 for members of the Dover Historical Society and $25.00 for non-members. Only a limited number of tickets will be sold. Your admission includes food, beer tasting, entertainment, and a Great Lakes Brewing Company beer glass. This event is 21 and over only.

Our 2009 Oktoberfest is also an excellent opportunity to support the Dover Historical Society through event sponsorship. This year’s sponsorships are available at a $100.00 level and all sponsors will be recognized at the event and receive four complimentary tickets and a reserved spot at one of our tables. Anyone interested in sponsoring the event or purchasing tickets may contact the Dover Historical Society at (330)-343-7040.
