Renowned artist P. Buckley Moss will return to Berlin for a show appearance with Berlin Creek Gallery September 24-25. Ms. Moss will be available 12-5 P.M., Friday and Saturday, September 24-25, to meet collectors and sign her work. Ms. Moss has created a new painting for the occasion titled “Autumn at the Zoar Hotel”, which will be released as a limited edition giclée on paper during the show. The Zoar Hotel was built in 1833 and is located in nearby, historic Zoar Village. The building is reported to be inhabited by its very own ghost, which Ms. Moss has included on the front porch in her painting.

On Thursday, September 23, Ms. Moss will visit Zoar Village and attend a fundraising event to benefit its ongoing preservation efforts. There will be a walking tour from 4:30 to 6:30 P.M., a harvest festival-theme dinner in Zoar’s historic schoolhouse at 6:30 P.M., and a ghost tour at 8:30 P.M. Zoar Village was founded in 1817 by a group of about 200 German Separatists seeking escape from religious persecution in their homeland. Today, Zoar is a community of approximately 75 families living in homes built from 1817 to the present. Many of the original homes have been preserved or restored, as have the many buildings and museums maintained by the Ohio Historical Society. The Zoar Community Foundation also strives to ensure the preservation of the historical characteristics and heritage of the village and the surrounding area. For more information on Thursday’s events in Zoar Village, please contact Berlin Creek Gallery at 330-893-2686.

Berlin Creek Gallery is one of about 300 galleries that carries P. Buckley Moss’ art. Each year Ms. Moss travels the country to visit up to 20 of these galleries for special shows. Pat Moss is well-known throughout the country for her portrayals of the Amish and for her tranquil landscapes.

“I love the regular contact with my collectors,” says Ms. Moss. “There is an energy I get from talking with my friends and collectors that helps feed my creativity. I am not one of those artists toiling away in an ivory tower. I need the contact with my collectors, and I crave the exchange of ideas.”

Pat Moss will meet collectors of her art and sign prints and all purchases made during the show. Collectors are invited to bring two previously purchased prints, paintings, or products for personalization as well.

Pat Moss has achieved phenomenal success in the art world and has spent the last 20 years giving back a measure of that success to the community. Donations of her artwork have raised more than $4 million for worthy charitable organizations across the country. In this endeavor, she is helped by the P. Buckley Moss Society, a group of more than 12,000 collector-members. She has also established the P. Buckley Moss Foundation for Children’s Education, which promotes the use of art in the school curriculum as an aid to reaching out to children with learning differences. Ms. Moss is dyslexic and grew up at a time when little was understood of this learning difficulty. Having achieved success in spite of (or, as she says, because of) this impediment, she is eager to help reach children in similar circumstances today.

For details on the show appearance, contact Nancy Tarzan at Berlin Creek Gallery, 5042 SR 39, P. O. Box 181, Berlin, OH 44610; phone: 330-893-2686; or e-mail: bcgallery@tusco.net.

The Dover Historical Society and the Friends of the Dover Public Library will be co-sponsoring a program about John Steinbeck’s classic novel, The Grapes of Wrath, on Saturday, September 11th at 1:00 PM in the Carriage House of the Reeves Home and Museum. Steinbeck scholar Robert DeMott will examine the historical, literary, and personal background and sources for this powerful novel, as well as discussing Steinbeck’s motivations. Most critics consider The Grapes of Wrath to be Steinbeck’s masterpiece, ranking among the premier American literary achievements in the 20th century.

“We are excited about this unique opportunity to partner with the Dover Historical Society on this project,” says Jim Gill, Director of the Dover Public Library. “I can think of no other piece of literature that captures so perfectly what it means to be an American. The Grapes of Wrath is a novel that has stood the test of time.”

“Working with the Dover Public Library on a project has long been a goal of ours at the Dover Historical Society,” says Historical Society Director Matt Lautzenheiser, “and this project is such a great fit. It really ties together the best of American literature and a watershed moment in U.S. History.”

Robert DeMott is Distinguished Professor of English at Ohio University where he teaches literature and writing. He has won numerous awards for teaching excellence and published many articles and books on the life and writings of John Steinbeck. Following his program DeMott will be available to sign copies of his annotated edition of The Grapes of Wrath and his edited edition of Steinbeck’s journals titled, Working Days: The Journals of the Grapes of Wrath. Copies of both books will be available for sale the day of the event. Admission to the program is free and all are welcome. This program is part of the Ohio Humanities Council speaker’s series in commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the New Deal legislation. For more information, please call the Dover Historical Society at 330-343-7040 or the Dover Public Library at 330-343-6123.

For the Fourth Annual American Soldiers Homecoming Festival, August 20-22, 2010, the Dennison Railroad Depot Museum in Dennison, Ohio, has added several new ways to honor and remember our American military heroes past and present, on the battle field and at home. Through a variety of ceremonies, yellow ribbons, Ticker Tape Parade, Honor Hours, bracelets and Hero Packages, there are many opportunities to thank those who have and continue to protect our nation.

All veterans and military personnel and their families can attend the event for FREE and receive a “Hero Packet” of Battle Passes, Museum admission, honorary name badges and be treated to a variety of VIP amenities.

New this year will be the “Sea of Yellow Ribbons”, where visitors can put the name of their beloved veteran or current servicemen or woman on a ribbon, and place it on the long wire of the Sea of Yellow Ribbons to be on display at the festival for all to see as the walk toward the Battle Field. Ribbons are available at the Depot for a donation, but visitors are very welcome to bring and hang their own ribbons as well.

The Field of White Crosses will also be at the Festival again this year.

Herobracelets, based out of Austin, Texas, created in 2004 to pay respect and honor the members of our Armed Forces who were lost in combat, will have bracelets for sale. These bracelets, reminiscent to those created during the Vietnam War era, are custom made from anodized aluminum. Herobracelets will be available for two local Tuscarawas County service members who lost their lives in Iraq, Army Specialist Richard Hardy in 2005, and CPL Keith Nepsa in 2007. Bracelets are available in Purple or Black. Herobracelet Dog tags in black will also be available for both men. $2 from each sale will be donated to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, an organization in Texas that offers medical care to those service members returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

“Honor Hours” will be available throughout the event where veterans can share experiences first hand with families and children.

The Ohio Flags of Honor will be a special feature, recognizing veterans from the Gulf Wars, and an opening ceremony will take place Friday, August 20 at 5:30 at the Field of Flags.

Veterans can also ride and be honored in the Ticker Tape Parade, Saturday August 21 at 9am. A Veteran Recognition Ceremony will be held immediate after the Parade at 10am.

A Memorial Service, featuring the Columbus area Sea Cadets, a 21 gun salute by the Tuscarawas VFW Honor Guard, and special speaker WWII Veteran Harry McKinght will end the celebration.Sunday, August 22, at 3pm.

COLUMBUS, OH – The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) will hold a public meeting in New Philadelphia on Thursday, August 26 from 6-9 p.m. to discuss proposed abandoned mine land projects being considered in eight northeastern Ohio counties. The meeting will be held in the Business Conference Room A of the Kent State University-Tuscarawas Campus, located at 330 University Drive in New Philadelphia.

Staff from the ODNR Division of Mineral Resources Management will be on-hand to discuss environmental and public health and safety issues associated with Ohio mines that were abandoned prior to August 3, 1977, when legislation addressing the problem went into effect.

Other topics include the policies and procedures of Ohio’s Abandoned Mine Land (AML) Program and the proposed projects for Columbiana, Coshocton, Jefferson, Mahoning, Portage, Stark, Tuscarawas and Wayne counties. Meeting attendees are encouraged to present details of their own abandoned mine problems and check on funding eligibility in these counties as well as Carroll, Harrison, Holmes, Medina, Summit and Trumbull counties.

In November, ODNR will apply for federal construction grant money from the U.S. Department of the Interior to fund abandoned mine clean-ups during the next year throughout the northeastern and southeastern Ohio coal-mining region. A portion of these funds, About $1.56 million, is earmarked for 16 non-emergency public health and safety projects in northeastern Ohio. The grant also includes $2.67 million to improve streams impacted by acid mine drainage problems in the entire coal region.

Non-emergency projects proposed for the northeastern Ohio mining district include:

Extending the a water line approximately 1 mile for several homes impacted by mine drainage.

Clearing, accessing and removing a tipple structure, off-site disposal of materials, regrading the area for positive drainage, and site restoration.

Extending an existing guardrail along a highwall, which is located near a road.

Eliminating several dangerous highwalls and providing positive drainage as well as site restoration.

Closing a vertical airshaft which includes access, excavation, placement of #1 and #2 stone, installation of a steel reinforced concrete cap, and site restoration.

Trenching and drain installation to intercept mine drainage and rerouting drainage from an existing surface pond away from historically sensitive structures.

Installing several mine drains to direct mine water away from several residences and redirecting existing seepage and underground flow as well as site restoration.

Closing an open mine exhaust shaft and removing an old tipple with rail system as well as site restoration.

Repairing a previously installed mine seal and outlet pipe and general site restoration.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. Visit the ODNR Web site at www.ohiodnr.com.

ZOAR – Zoar Village State Memorial and the Zoar Community Association invite you to bring your family and experience an old fashioned Werktage on Saturday, July 24.

Werktage translates from German as “Work Day” and Zoar will be alive with costumed volunteers and demonstrations to help children and adults try a little nineteenth century labor and lunch.

New this year is a photo scavenger hunt map that will lead you through ten historic buildings and work stations in Zoar. Activities include butter churning (and tasting) , wool dyeing, candle dipping, try a flicker or a spindle on sheep wool, cookie cutting and baking, making and tasting cole slaw, and a take home dried flower arrangement from the Zoar Garden House. You can also paint and create a tin ornament to take with you in the Tin Shop, help the blacksmith make a hook, and find out just how laundry was done. The Zoar Kitchen will feature cooking traditional German treats on a “kessel ofen,” (German cooking oven). You will love carving a figure from soap in the Cabinet Shop and can round out the day with a stop at the petting zoo to find out just what the farmer has to do to care for the animals.

Ticket prices are $8 for adults and $6 for children 4-17. Ticket price includes a light lunch at the Zoar schoolhouse where you will learn to squeeze your own lemonade and enjoy the toys and games that children played at recess 200 years ago. Demonstrations and activities will be available from 10am-3pm.

Zoar Village was founded in 1817 by a group of about 200 German Separatists seeking escape from religious persecution in their homeland. Today, Zoar is a community of approximately 75 homes built from 1817 until the present. Many of the original homes have been preserved or restored. Find out more by visiting www.zca.org.

For more information or to make your reservations for this wonderful event please contact The Zoar Community Association at 330-874-3011, or 1-800-262-6195.
